What is the Best Type of Bed? A Guide to Bed Styles

what is the best type of bed

Whether you’re upgrading your guest room, moving into a new home with more bedrooms, or redesigning your own bedroom, the first thing you’ll want to purchase is — you guessed it! — the bed.  At Giorgi Bros, we have a huge selection of quality beds near San Francisco to help you transform any room into a luxurious and restful sleeping space. But first, it’s up to you to select what is the best type of bed for your particular needs.

To help you make this decision, we’ve outlined the nine major types of beds you’ll likely be choosing from.

What Is the Best Type of Bed?

Every space, situation, and décor preference will require a different type of bed. What is the best type of bed for you?

Upholstered beds

Upholstered beds typically feature a headboard, footboard and base that has been upholstered, or padded and covered with fabric or leather. This type of bed offers a modern, comfortable feel to the entire bedroom.

Fabrics used on upholstered beds are similar to any other furniture fabric — for example, velvet, tweed, cotton, or canvas. These beds are great if for sitting up in bed to work or read as you can recline back on the soft surface of the headboard.

Canopy Beds

Drift softly off to sleep beneath the whimsical frame of a canopy bed.

These beds feature four posts and lateral bars that connect the posts along the top (effectively creating a cube shape above the bed). They look especially great in spaces with tall ceilings, but any bedroom can accommodate a canopy bed.

Historically, canopy beds have included sheer fabrics or drapes on the frame, explaining the origin of the name.

Sleigh Beds

For a more traditional look, consider a sleigh bed. These beds are typically made of a fine hardwood, but they can also be iron, aluminum, or steel.

They feature a thick, bold headboard and footboard. Like a winter sleigh, the headboard and footboard will also typically curve out softly and feature embellishments in the wood and stain.

Storage Beds

Small bedrooms, and limited-space apartments will benefit greatly from storage beds. These multi-functional beds offer a place to sleep as well, as added drawers or other storage for everything from toys and books to linens and clothes.

The best thing about storage beds is that they often come in a variety of styles, so you won’t have to sacrifice form for function.

Panel Beds

Panel beds are one of the most common styles of beds. This bed style features a large headboard and (usually) a footboard — both made from wood. Typically, matching side rails connect the headboard and footboard, framing a traditional box spring and mattress.

Panel beds often feature raised designs or molding, adding depth and visual interest to the design.

Trundle Beds

Ideal for children’s rooms, dens and studies that convert into guest rooms, trundle beds save space and provide extra sleeping spots when you need them.

The design of a trundle bed is usually a twin (or larger) bed that features an additional pull-out bed beneath it.

Daybeds

Daybeds are another great space-saving bed. These twin-sized beds are ideal for lounging, sitting, napping, and even sitting. And of course, they’re used for sleeping too! Most daybeds are 3-sided rather than having a headboard and footboard. For this reason, daybeds are typically centered with the long side against the wall.

You’ll usually find them in converted guest rooms or children’s rooms.

Platform Beds

Many Scandinavian-style beds are platform beds. These beds do not typically have a box spring. Instead, they feature a frame and lateral slats that provide support for a stand-alone mattress. These beds are simple in style, sleek and modern.

Platform beds are also available in a variety of styles, including upholstered and wood options.

Iron Beds

While previously thought of as a traditional option, iron beds are now included in a wide variety of bedroom design styles. To name a few, iron beds are popular in modern farmhouse designs, industrial-inspired bedrooms, and vintage and bohemian styled bedrooms.

While some iron beds simply feature vertical bars, others may have ornate designs and swirls worked into the headboard and footboard.
