The bedroom has always been such a personal space. A bedroom can be soft and intimate, minimalistic and modern, fun and whimsical, or a healthy mix. It all depends on what feels and looks best to you! Let’s explore how to decorate a bedroom while keeping your personal space and style in mind.
Our bedroom is where we go to re-charge. A good night’s sleep can make or break an entire day. The rejuvenation sought after in the bedroom is scientifically proven to map your mental and physical state throughout your waking hours. Keep this in mind as we address the key elements of making your bedroom a respite.
The best colors for bedrooms are colors that are rooted in nature, muted and peaceful. You should choose your bedroom colors by what emotions they evoke.
Your local paint expert can guide you toward earth based colors and away from colors with vibrant undertones. Be sure to take away several paint samples and observe them in your space. Light is always different and trying to chose a color in simulated sunlight at a big box store is not an ideal situation. If you have any natural light in your room, be sure to observe these colors throughout different times of the day before making a commitment.
The furnishings you use when decorating a bedroom will determine the much needed positive and negative space to visually balance your design. The bed, even though it may or may not be the focal point, is the anchor of every bedroom. As a helpful rule for placement, a bedroom should have a minimum 2 foot passage between the bed and any walls or closets. Pick bedding that compliments your bed style. Is your bed low and sleek? Then a mid century modern style bedspread might be the choice for you. A more traditional bed would incorporate layering and encourage us to “fluff” it up a bit. Either way you make your bed, the addition of some witty or subdued throw pillows is always a good look!
If space is not an issue, it is nice to have a cozy reading chair and ottoman in your bedroom flanked by an adjustable floor lamp. This creates a quiet reading or crocheting nook for you to retire when it is not quite time to turn in. It also provides a space for your significant other to read when you may be trying to sleep or vice-versa.
In a teen room, the cozy reading chair may present itself as a fun futon or hanging chair. And, in a nursery, a comfy rocker would make an excellent addition.
The thrill of adding a piece of upholstered furniture to your room adds softness and the ability to choose a complimentary fabric that adds interest to your over-all design. Draping the chair with a casual throw is both functional and fun!
When considering additional furnishings in the bedroom, it is important to provide yourself with a night table on each side of the bed. Night tables equipped with drawers are always a big hit for stashing away medication, tissues or cellular devices. There are so many night table options these days. Anything from a traditional campaign style table to a whimsical chrome and glass table. The night table is an awesome opportunity to showcase easily reached table lamps that can be switched on or off without leaving the comfort of your bed.
One thing to remember when using two night tables- they do not have to be the same table. You can mix and match tables and lamps to add interest or define masculine or feminine sides of the bed. When mixing tables and lamps, the only rule is that the lamps stand at the same height. For example- if your tables are different heights, but the lamps are the same, use an interesting box or a stack of books to elevate the lamps to the same height. This will allow your horizontal lines to be level and create the harmonious feel you are after.
If your closets do not provide enough clothes storage, consider the obvious in either a low horizontal dresser or a high boy which takes advantage of the vertical space of your room. A storage bench at the end of the bed is always nice for putting on or taking off shoes and will add color to an otherwise voided area.
If you are space challenged and still need unconventional storage, look into purchasing a bed that offers storage built in. Also, if you are working with an existing bed, there are many options for “under the bed” storage. Just be sure to use a dust ruffle to hide any boxes.
Every successful bedroom design is in need of the comfort provided by window treatments, comforters, mirrors, art, pillows and throw rugs.
First, find the perfect curtains. If you prefer a completely dark bedroom, pick curtains that “black out” the light. On the other hand if you enjoy being woken with the morning light, pick sheers that dance in the sun.
The addition of a rug will anchor the room while adding comfort and pizzazz.
Let’s explore how to use mirrors and art in your design. Hung in just the right place, mirrors reflect sunlight, making rooms look larger. They can also reflect art to be enjoyed from more than one angle. When placing mirrors, take into consideration spaces and pieces you want to highlight.
This is your room. Add pieces of art, family photos and items that make you feel good.
