Ready for some new and exciting pieces in the bedroom, but wondering how to coordinate bedroom furniture?
The bedroom has the potential to be one of our most distinct design statements. With this being said, it can sometimes become a bit intimidating for you to coordinate your choices and keep a well balanced feel to a space that should remain free of clutter and distraction.
First of all, when decorating your bedroom, remember that it should be a calm, relaxing space. The bedroom is where you come to rest, to read, to take a nap, to love, to be loved and to sleep. It is the one room in the house where you can truly be yourself, closing the door to the rest of the world. The bedroom is your sanctuary.
For the most personal space in your home, don’t you owe yourself more than a point and click bedroom furniture purchase? Look through home and travel magazines, read blogs and make notes of your likes and dislikes. This will help you come up with a style that can truly be your own.
After thinking about what feel you would like in your bedroom, let’s start with picking out what is almost always the bedroom focal point-the bed.
It is important to know what you are working with. Take the measurements of your room and sketch the walls, doorways, closets and windows (with dimensions) and have this info with you at all times. Beds come in all shapes and sizes and by knowing your room dimensions, it should be easy to determine what size bed will fit in your room. Be sure to leave at least a 30” walkway when placing your bed.
Now that you have determined what size bed will fit in your bedroom, let’s determine the style from your “dream board” of inspirational photos. There are many different types of styles, colors and shapes that make up the best coordinated bedrooms. Pick the style of bed that best compliments you inspirational style.
A low, sleek bed would be a great fit if your style is Mid-century Modern or prairie style. A tall, well covered bed lends itself to a much more formal, transitional feel. Be sure if you are to pick the latter that you have enough space over, under and beside the bed. The bulkiness of a formal bed is best coordinated in a large space.
Do you remember playing blocks as a child? Building towers that fell when you put one too many blocks on one side? Watching your beautiful tower fall was much less an investment than bringing home pieces that either do not fit or simply do not get along. Although, the tears you cry as an adult may be just as heart felt as the ones you cried as a child, you will be able to ace furniture coordination by keeping one thing in mind- balance.
So, how do you coordinate bedroom furniture if you want something special and meaningful, custom and expressive? Remember the blocks. As adults, we learn from the mistakes we made as a child. Too much bulk on one side and it will all collapse under the weight.
This is where positive and negative space come in. Every good design has a balanced amount of positive and negative space. This does not mean we measure cubic feet. It does mean that we need to stand back and look at our overall design, balancing the room. Nothing is worse than walking into someone’s home and feeling as if a giant has shaken the house and everything has stuck to the walls!
Feel free to express yourself when coordinating bedroom furniture. Get off the walls and dance!
“Do all of my bedroom furnishings have to match or come from the same collection?” By all means-No! Let’s go back to the blocks. Imagine your bed in the center of your room. It is your larger block. The next logical edition would be a night stand on each side of your bed. Add to that, lighting and any other decorative accent you enjoy. Remember that your night stand is there for the convenience of reaching for the light, storing books and magazines, medications, etc. Do not feel the need to overdo it.
When picking your nightstands it is perfectly ok, and most definitely more interesting if you mix and match nightstands and lights. The only rule is that when everything is in place, the top of your lights are at the same level. This will allow the nightstands to work in harmony with anchoring your bed.
The same is allowed when picking out upholstered goods, such as an upholstered reading chair with ottoman. There is no need to have two chairs, if you do not have the space. Just be sure to add another piece such as a dresser, console table or trunk opposite the chair as to balance the space.
Obviously, color has a lot to do with coordinating bedroom furniture. Be sure to pick an overall color that you love for your walls and coordinate with throw pillows, rugs, comforter and window treatments. Add in splashes of coordinating colors that make you feel relaxed. Be sure to pick colors from nature as these colors naturally create a sense of peace. Avoid loud colors that jump out at you or dominate your quiet space.
If you’ve read through these recommendations and feel as if you may not have enough room to furnish your space without it feeling cluttered, remember that there are many options for nightstands and furniture for your bedroom.
